CORELLI, orch. REGER  - Variations on "La Folia"
            soloist - Arisa Fujita
BACH  -  Brandenburg Concerto No.4
soloists - Mark Hartt-Palmer, Gillian Hooker & Bridgette Knight
VIVALDI  -  Violin Concerto in E (from L'Estro Armonico)
            soloist - Arisa Fujita
BACH  -  Double Violin Concerto
            soloists - Arisa Fujita & Mark Hartt-Palmer
ELGAR  -  Serenade for strings
BOUGHTON  -  Three Folk Dances

My admiration for the level of artistry and expertise attained by this orchestra mushroomed when I was told, during the break, that this was its debut performance. To judge by the capacity audience's clear enthusiasm  for its reading of Elgar's lovely Serenade, they agreed that the Chichester String Ensemble had come out of the blocks running: a sensitive account of the slow movement's love-music had followed a refreshingly open-air allegro.

But what made this edition of Music on Sundays most memorable was the three splendid and contrasting baroque concertos that showcased guest soloist Arisa Fujita, leader Mark Hartt-Palmer and Chichester S.O. flautists Gillian Hooker and Bridgette Knight. The last three gave an expertly buoyant account of Bach's 4th Brandenburg Concerto: this tuneful, easy-going music, full of lightness and cool flute sounds, was ideal for a hot afternoon, and the unusual lilt given to the andante greatly helped the music's flow.

The Brandenburg was sandwiched by two Italian pieces for violin and strings, given virtuoso performances by London Guildhall professor Arisa Fujita. In a delightfully perky account of the Vivaldi opening allegro, as in the highly energetic finale, Miss Fujita's playing was well-nigh flawless. Quite how lucky Chichester was to have her became still clearer when she was joined by the orchestra's director in the greatest of Bach's violin concertos. The largo's poignant duet was realised in a touchingly eloquent dialogue between two fine artists, and the gusto with which soloists and orchestra despatched the all-action finale provoked the loudest applause of the afternoon.

Rutland Boughton's unpretentious folk dances afforded some of us our first taste of a neglected composer. The effect was of a lively extended encore - so that the real one, a waltz by the ever delightful Dvorak, gave us a second helping of dessert. It rounded off a musical feast that contrasted starkly with the bitter pill being served to other audiences (i.e. a certain soccer match against Germany.......).
